Communicate 2.1.2 Communication Guidelines Quest

To complete this Quest:

Reflect on the needs for your individual Communication Plan. Then, construct a general outline that includes the following:
  • Welcome email (generic for all courses)

The old saying goes you never get a second chance to make a first impression.  The initial email should include a statement of high expectations as many view online classes as "fluff" classes.  In addition all contact information should be provided as well as institutional policies.

  • Personal notes versus mass communication to stakeholders (appropriate times)

Students often fail because the instructor was less than clear regarding expectations.  Grades are a clear indicator of students who are struggling and if time allows, individual messages should be sent to these students.  While a mass communication is time saving, the nuclear option often results in students seeking assistance when they actually are doing fine in the course.

  • Stakeholders

Any message that is intended for the entire class should be sent to all stakeholders as well.  Such action sends a clear signal that everyone is seen as part of this educational quest and no one individual is any more important than another.

  • School Policies regarding Communication

Student should be made award of all communication policies.  FERPA regulations along with information concerning what is and is not appropriate should be clearly outlined for the students.

  • Tools available for effective Communication

Outlook has long been my chosen tool for communication with students.  The capabilities of this program may be limited to some folks abut has always provided me with exactly what I needed.  Lots of programs are out there and the list grows daily but as a purist, I'll stick to Outlook.  Smore, Remind 101, and all the other programs included in our lesson could easily provide a communication format for those less than impressed with Outlook.
