Communicate 1.1.2 Laws of Communication Quest

To complete this Quest:

In your respective blog, reflect on the laws of communication and discuss the following:
  • How can one refrain from violating FERPA guidelines in online communication?

First of all it is imperative that someone know what FERPA allows and does not allow.  Directory information is a term that most people do not understand but involves a category of information that can be released to those requesting.  The best way I know that you can ensure you are not violating FERPA is to never give out Non-Directory information unless you have a "Student Consent for Release of Non-Directory Information" on file.  This document should be completely filled out and signed by all interested parties.

Directory information includes student name, address, and phone.  Personally, I would not release any information without approval by the student.

  • What methods could be employed to verify that copyright is not being violated?

Important for individuals to ensure they know the copyright law.  Individuals should always assume that information on the internet is copyrighted material.  Simply ask permission seems to be the best course of action to ensure that copyright is not being violated.

  • Does copyright require that all work, images, words, and graphics must be original?

Copyright protects "original works of authorship".
